This article applies to:

Windows Server 2003 R2

PROBLEM

After a server reboot you are not able to connect to it via Remote Desktop with errror 2308, although the server is online and responds to ping.

CAUSE

This can occur on machines with multiple network adapters where terminal service is configured to bind with any adapter.

This can cause that after restart, terminal service randomly binds for example to a backup or monitoring network which is usually not reachable from the production one.

SOLUTION

Configure the Terminal service to bind to the network adapter on your productive network.

Start/Programs/Administrative Tools/Terminal Services Configuration

Select Connections then right click RDP-Tcp and select Properties.

In the Properties dialog under network adapter, select the network to which you want terminal services to bind to.
