PROBLEM

In the System event log, the following error is logged:

Description:
The DHCP service encountered the following error when backing up the database:
An error occurred while accessing the DHCP database. Look at the DHCP server event log for more information on this error.

 

In addition, in the Application log, following errors are logged:

Description:
svchost (1764) An attempt to delete the file "C:\Windows\system32\dhcp\backup\old\new" failed with system error 5 (0x00000005): "Access is denied. ".  The delete file operation will fail with error -1032 (0xfffffbf8).

Description:
svchost (1764) The backup has been stopped because it was halted by the client or the connection with the client failed.

 

CAUSE 1

Windows Indexing service is enabled on the DHCP directory.

 

SOLUTION

Disable indexing on the DHCP folder:

Right click C:\Windows\System32\DHCP folder and select Properties / Advanced

Clear the option "Allow files in this folder to have contents indexed in addition to file properties"

 

CAUSE 2

Exclusion for the DHCP folder is not configured in the antivirus software.

 

SOLUTION

Configure exclusions as instructed in Microsoft Knowledge Base article 822158 - Virus scanning recommendations for Enterprise computers that are running currently supported versions of Windows.
