This article applies to:

Windows 2008 R2

Exchange 2010 SP3

ESX 5.1

PROBLEM

Some of the Microsoft Exchange services do not start after reboot although their start type is set to Auto.

Those are usually

Microsoft Exchange Protected Service Host,

Microsoft Exchange Service Host,

Microsoft Exchange Forms Based Authentication Service,

RPC Client Access

If you attempt to start them manually they will start without a problem.

CAUSE

This usually happens if Exchange services start before other services on which Exchange depends on, are started.

WORKAROUND

A simple workaround is to change the startup type of Exchange Services from Automatic to Automatic (Delayed Start) This will start the Exchange services with a delay of 120 seconds which gives enough time to the system to start the services needed by Exchange to start properly.

The service startup type can be changed by selecting Start / Administrative Tools / Services. Right click the service you want to modify and select Automatic (Delayed Start) .
