This article applies to:
Exchange 2010 SP1 Rollup Update 5

PROBLEM
User is unable to login to OWA (Outlook Web App) and the following error is displayed

The username or password you entered isn't correct. Try entering it again.

CAUSE
This happens if the change password function is not turned on for the OWA login screen (default in Exchange 2010) and one of the following is true:
- the users's password has expired or
- the administrator has set the "user must change passsword at next logon" option on the user's account.

SOLUTION
Turn on the password change functionality by adding the following registry key:

1. Log on to the Client Access server.

2. Start Registry Editor (regedit).

3. Locate the following registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchange OWA.

4. Create a DWORD value: ChangeExpiredPasswordEnabled and set the value to 1
5. Exit Registry Editor.

6. Reboot the server

This solution does not apply to older versions of Exchange (2007, 2003, 2000). In case you have to enable it on these older versions please follow instructions given in the following technical articles:
Exchange 2007 - Configuring the Change Password Feature in Outlook Web Access
